The classic forms of Charles and Ray Eames, such as the DTM and set of four DCMs, are always the first to capture my attention because not only is their work innovative but it remains pure, functional and beautiful. The desk by Hans Wegner exhibits a simple elegance that paired with the playful Asterisk wall clock by George Nelson & Associates would make the ideal workstation for my home. Jumping ahead to the 21st century, the exploration of negative space draws me to the Void stool by Ron Gilad and Log 100 by Arik Levy. Gilad’s design is fascinating, as it poignantly references what is not there; yet, I imagine filling the Void with beautiful art and design books for all to see. Likewise, Levy’s Log 100 has a focus on the negative space. The see-through grid forces us to explore the interior and ingeniously encourages this table or seat to extend its functionality in more ways than one.
